The one advantage the Israelis had was the quality of leadership at the small-unit level. This study begins with a brief review of the strategic and operational situation in the Middle East in This includes background information on the Israeli and Arab forces facing each other on the Golan Heights and their plans for the defense and attack respectfully prior to the start of hostilities.
The majority of the thesis discussion is concerned with the actual battle on the Golan Heights. It highlights the contributions that small-unit leadership made during the battle that allowed the vastly outnumbered IDF to destroy a massive Soviet-style Arab army. This portion of the study also looks at the experiences of those Israeli leaders involved in the fighting. The study then looks at leadership from the Israeli perspective.
I define what leadership is and why it is important at the small-unit level. The conclusion of the thesis is that the IDF was able to fight and win even though surprised and vastly outnumbered due to the quality of leadership at the small-unit level. For the past decade, the U. Marine Corps and its sister services have been engaged in what has been termed "hybrid warfare," which ranges from active combat to civilian support. Hybrid warfare typically occurs in environments where all modes of war are employed, such as conventional weapons, irregular tactics, terrorism, disruptive technologies, and criminality to destabilize an existing order.
This report examines the operational environment, existing abilities, and gap to include data, technology, skill sets, training, and measures of effectiveness for small unit leaders in conducting enhanced company operations ECOs in hybrid engagement, complex environments. Improving the Decision Making Abilities of Small Unit Leaders also determines how to understand the decision making calculus and indicators of adversaries.
This report recommends ways to ease the burden on small unit leaders and to better prepare the small unit leader for success. Much of the school's leadership content came from Malone's book. I would highly recommend it to any military leader who wants a day to day guide that they can use in a practical way. I plan to consult the book often as I lead my own small units in the Guard.

This book is very geared to actual army officers; I was recommended it for generic leadership lessons, to which I think it does a good job, but if you are not in the army some of them may not be entirely necessary. The author does not stop at an idea of what to do but he consistently gives you an example of what to do and what not to do, so I can understand the concept and have an idea of how to apply.

Some of the examples in this book are a bit dated, but the overall message of the book is excellent and straight forward. I would recommend this for all junior officers and NCOs. An easy to read book that I wish I had access to as a 1st year LT.
