Desktop freezes when downloading large files

I am still leaning towards the CPU of the motherboard as the problem, mainly because both motherboards had issues with freezing and I didn't get the chance to replace the CPU, just the motherboard.

A identical motherboard, the older one, and CPU was tested and it had no issues whatsoever. I am believing that I now had a faulty CPU and faulty Motherboard instead of just a faulty motherboard back then. As for the RAM, I didn't actually think it was the problem, but I never tested it because it seemed to work optimally every time. Despite my thoughts, I decided to list it as one of the possible issues all because it hadn't been thoroughly tested.

As for your vid drivers, just go to ati. CPU's rarely exhibit symptoms of failure and the common denominator between this mobo and the original is the ram and cpu. My money is on the ram being the issue or another faulty mobo but most likely the ram. If the RAM truly was the issue, I wouldn't have been able to run The Elder Scrolls IV, or Starcraft 2 on my computer without it freezing, yet I have had them both run for nearly 24 hours straight with no slowdowns, no errors, and no freezes.

Considering that the 2GB stick of RAM was the only stick of RAM in my computer, wouldn't the computer have problems starting up if it was faulty or would the page filing counter this? Iguess the only way to find out is to stress test the system and monitor the cpu outputs?

Expensive I know, but if you have tried everything else, strange though it seems could well be the only way. I don't know what pulled it.

It might have been Vista being Vista and possibly has nothing to do with the freezes at all, but who knows? I plan on replacing this computer within 5 months, but I also wanted to fix the problem with this one so I actually had two of my very own computers.

CPU Stress test. Could be the slot itself Tx, but if it was the slot, with 2 sticks in, would it still see the working slot?

I cannot run the memtest seeing as I have no CD's to put it on. So no, I did not run it. I found three just now. I will have to get around to the memtest soon. Tx -- I have tried the 2GB stick in each yellow slot. Then I tried it in each yellow slot with both sticks of MB in the black ones. Then I tried it without the 2GB stick in there at all.

All three of these resulted in what usually happens, which is the freezing. Core usually runs below 20 celsius constantly I will have to check the temps when I am done with Burn In. How many tests do you think people should go for? Test number Temps won't change.

I'm closing it and getting some sleep. The temperatures will not get any higher than this. Burn In is causing my computer to lock up for about 5 seconds every 30 seconds or so. It also locks up for about a second every couple seconds or so.

I have gotten up to Test number 52 and the temperatures aren't changing, so I guess it is safe to assume this isn't going to change much. As for the RAM slots overheating I really doubt it. They are running colder than 25 celsius constantly. The only thing cooler is the Core, which is currently running at 12 celsius and drops to around 10 celsius every once in awhile.

Not all cores need to be put under constant stress in order to make them freeze up. If it pulls more information in than it can send out, then it will eventually freeze. That doesn't mean it is under stress. I am going to throw out this idea Maybe something in my computer isn't getting enough Voltage? I mean, it shows one core getting 1. I can see why they are different voltages, but wouldn't that cause problems if they both were running and one expected the other to keep up or stay around the same speed?

Or maybe the Voltage is plain out too low. You need to be a member in order to leave a comment. Sign up for a new account in our community. It's easy! Already have an account? Last edited by BlueBanana ; 16 Mar, am.

So I just downloaded 24GB without any issues. So I added the steam folder to the exceptions. It's probably wise not to add the whole steam folder, but it will do for testing purpososes. I can't tell for sure if that solved the issue completely - but it looks promising. Hi, thanks for your responses! I tried your suggestion, but I still got a crash while downloading DOOM : After spending a lot of time with the Steam support I kinda came to the conclusion that it's my hardware, that somehow Steam downloads access the hardware differently than Uplay or Origin, so it causes my faulty hardware to crash.

I have no proof of this, and I'm tired of trying out stuff now. Guess I'll have to invest into some new hardware at some point. Before investing in any new hardware I suggest to run a few diagnosis tools. The most likely defective hardware that could cause this, would be a faulty harddrive. Use seatools Link [www. It takes a long time, let it run over night or so. Another thing you can do is check your ram for errors. Check this article [technet.

This can also take a very long time. In my optinion it's unlikely that your mainboard, cpu or gpu is faulty. In the meantime you can use another pc or laptop to download doom and copy the files in your steam library, so you can at least download and play your games.

Thank you guys in advance for any help. Could be a few things,.. Might help tp upload a Speccy report for people to look at.. Not sure if that would make a difference. I dont see the cooler being an issue. After all, its only cooling the CPU. Its only been a positive in lowering the temperature. What should I be looking for on my motherboard? The only thing Ive done is ensured all connections are secure and there is no dust buildup.

Should I be monitoring something when I attempt to download a game? Im planning on heading to the local Walmart to buy a USB drive to run a Memtest on the RAM today and will make sure to get that report back to you guys.
